Meet Sarah Miller: The Voice Behind Your Backyard Farmer

My Background & Journey

I discovered my passion for urban farming in my early twenties when I converted my small rental property’s concrete backyard into a thriving container garden. Now in my mid-forties, I’ve transformed my knowledge from two decades of hands-on experience into a successful blog that helps others grow food in limited spaces.

My Experience & Expertise

As a self-taught urban agriculturist, I’ve mastered the art of maximizing small-space production through companion planting, succession sowing, and sustainable permaculture principles. Over the years, I’ve expanded my knowledge from basic gardening to everything from vermicomposting and greywater irrigation to hydroponic window gardens and rooftop vegetable plots.

My Approach

I believe in keeping things real and accessible. That’s why I started my “Friday Failure” series, chronicling the real challenges of maintaining a biodiverse urban ecosystem, from beneficial insect management to soil remediation. Running the neighborhood seed bank from my front porch has become one of my greatest joys—it’s more than just sharing seeds, it’s about building heirloom variety preservation and community resilience. I love seeing my neighbors’ eyes light up when they realize they can grow their own food, too.

My Urban Farming Systems & Methods

My approach to urban agriculture goes beyond just growing food—I’ve created integrated systems where nothing goes to waste. My kitchen scraps feed my vermiculture bins, which nourish my raised beds, while my rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation system maintains optimal soil moisture. My small flock of heritage breed chickens (who I adore!) provides eggs and compost, completing the closed-loop system I’ve perfected over years of experimentation. Every square inch of my yard has a purpose in this sustainable ecosystem.

My Mission & Vision

Through “Your Backyard Farmer,” I share everything I’ve learned about urban agriculture, from no-till methods and sheet mulching to high-density polyculture plantings. My mission is simple: I want to prove that anyone can become an urban homesteader, regardless of their background—because if I could do it, so can you! Whether teaching microgreens cultivation in upcycled containers or demonstrating how to build a three-bin composting system, my goal is to inspire more city dwellers to transform their concrete spaces into productive oases. Every time I receive a message from a reader who’s harvested their first crop, I’m reminded of why I started this journey in the first place.
